Find a company that has extensive experience in this as it requires a high level of skill and experience to properly deal with the files and machine. Rob Arps at Additive Workshop in Portland was great to work with and a superb gentleman. It is important to cut up and orientate the 3D model to optimize for detail and minimize "shadowing," which is where the CNC cannot access undercuts. Robotic arms can potential minimize shadowing. Once you and your client are happy with the final model, you are ready to send it to the CNC machine (or 3d printer). Throughout this process it is also helpful to have your client involved (assuming it is a commission). This ensures that they are happy and minimizes the amount of rework later. Keep in mind that when you pose your sculpt the anatomy will shift and you will have to redo some work after you break symmetry. Although you can use poseable symmetry after posing a sculpt, it is important to add a sufficient amount of detail before posing your sculpt to prevent unnecessary sculpting. Next, you will be posing your sculpt to give it proper gesture and attitude. This stage is most important in conveying your intentions to the viewer. At this point, you are still sculpting in symmetry mode, which cuts your work in half. A major advantage of Zbrush is that you can move back to the lowest subdivision level even after you have added fine details allowing you to make corrections to primary form without destroying your detail work. Notice how light and shadow break up and have continuity in across the sculpt. Pay close attention to both the shadows and reflections as they are key to understanding the form. Example here from a great artist: It is crucial to pay attention to how light interacts with your sculpt. It is not enough to have a surface level understanding. Creating ecorche drawings is helpful. Make sure you have a thorough understanding of your subject's anatomy. Add subdivision levels as you progressively move through secondary and tertiary levels of form. Next, focus on getting the primary level of form down, adding general volume and getting your silhouettes correct along the three major axis. In this pose it is also easy to superimpose it over an image in orthogonal view to ensure an accurate silhouette - take care to select a photo with minimal distortion. Ideally the mesh will be in a static and symmetrical pose to take advantage of Zbrush's symmetrical sculpting. First, create a mesh within Zbrush, or as i did, in another traditional program like Modo. The more time you spend studying your subject before starting, the better. Spend as much time in the presence of your subject as possible and make sure you collect dozens, if not hundreds of images. Mixing Board - Clean Sheets - multiple paper sheets are great to mix filler on.Ĭreating a master in Zbrush was a great experience with unnatural abilities like sculpting on layers, posing, undo's and the ability to make proportional changes without affecting detail! Creating the master in Zbrush made the project quicker than a traditional approach and enabled going directly to monument without a maquette. Wax tools - helps to press the wax into holes. Wax - Ferris Patch-Eze - really, nearly any kind of wax can be used to fill pinholes. Abrasive Paper - Mirka Abranet - very nice to use 7. Ruby and diamond bits - they run very clean and smooth. Die Grinder - Harbor freight cheapy, but works great 5. Pallet knife - great for small mixes and application of filler and surfacer 4. This is thinner than the filler and great for filling holes and smaller cracks. One can use standard body filler as well but this is nice stuff. Filler - Adtech P-14 - a high grade filler. Hard Surface Tools These materials are used to cleanup the Objet and viper models which have build lines and sometimes need minor correction. SLA Machine - Viper Pro There was additional harware specific software used as well. And of course you thumb and finger for lots of handwork! Equipment Here is the equipment used in creating the replicas, however, Zbrush was used in creating the original sculpture. Curved Rake - These are to even out large smooth areas. Detail tools - Richeson Double Wire End Tools - This is merely my choice here but any similar tools can be used. Clay - 2AB-225 Plasticine Oil Clay - a very nice blend that does not cause irritation under your fingernails 2. Clay tools These tools were used in creating the monument.
